How can I get paint off my car window?
Our daughter just graduated high school and begged to decorate our second car for graduation. Now, my car is in the shop and my partner and I are forced to use this pink, purple, glitter mess of a car. The paint won’t seem to come off the windows in particular. How can I get paint off my car windows?

Congratulations to your new graduate! I’m sorry to hear the paint won’t come off.
Generally, there are two types of window paint for cars: oil-based paint and water-based paint. Usually, you can remove them using most of the same steps, but it is helpful to know which one is on your windows. To start:
- Use a razor blade to scrape away at any large flakes of paint. This will not remove all the paint but will get big chunks out of the way. Do this with care, so you don’t leave any scratches on the glass.
- For water-based paint, mix warm water with liquid soap and scrub at the window with the rough edge of a sponge or a soft-bristled brush (like a toothbrush).
- For oil-based paint, use either WD40 or acetone in a well-ventilated area. Apply either solution and with a clean cloth, wipe the paint away. Then, clean the window with soap and water. If using the WD40, allow it to sit for up to 20 minutes to eat away at the paint. Wipe acetone away immediately.
