How can I get my son's name to appear on the insurance card?

My son is 18, and I would like to register his car under his name. But the DMV won't accept the insurance because the policy card only shows my name. His car and mine are under one insurance policy (which is in my name). Can his name be printed on the card along with mine?

Insurance cards
only hold essential information, so they typically only list the main policy holder. That said, here are your two best options for getting your son’s name on your insurance card:
  • Call your provider: While some providers have specific policies about whose name shows up on the insurance card, others may be more flexible. Call your insurance company and ask if they can add your son’s name to your insurance card. Hopefully, they’ll be able to help.
  • Have your son buy a new policy: This option may not be cost-effective, but it’s the easiest way to have him listed as the policyholder. As long as he’s a named driver on your policy, it’s unlikely he’ll be listed on the insurance card.
If getting your son’s name on your current insurance doesn’t work and you want to avoid him getting his own insurance policy, try bringing your insurance
declaration page
to the DMV. This will show drivers and cars listed under your policy. It is up to the DMV’s discretion if they will accept this.
Unfortunately, some states like
New York
require car owners to put their insurance policies and registration under the same name. So your son may need his own policy to register his car. Luckily, that’s where
