If you want free
rental car insurance
, you have two options:
Option 1: Use your own car insurance policy.
  • The easiest option is to simply use the coverage you already have on your personal
    car insurance
policy to protect the rental. Most car insurance companies extend your policy’s coverage to a rental vehicle. If you have a current policy, ask your provider whether they cover rental cars.
Option 2: Check with your credit card company:
  • If you can’t use your existing coverage on your rental, check with your credit card company to find out whether they offer a card benefit for rental vehicles. When you use your card to pay for the rental and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver, the credit card company will cover damage and theft to the vehicle.
Another option would be to invest in a
non-owner’s car insurance policy
, which is a type of coverage that follows you (the driver) no matter the vehicle you’re in. However, non-owner’s car insurance typically only includs minimum liability limits—meaning damage to the rental may not be covered.
