How can I fix a dent in a chrome bumper?

I inherited my great-uncle’s 1970 Monte Carlo. It’s actually in pretty good shape, but one problem area is the front bumper. How can I fix a dent in a chrome bumper?

Restoration projects can be a lot of fun, particularly if you’re working on a car that’s been in the family so long. Chrome is pretty difficult to dent, but because the car is a classic, it’s likely seen a lot of road wear. There are two approaches you can take to fixing a chrome bumper: hammer and dolly method or boiling water method.
Hammer and dolly method Step 1: Place a dolly on the outside of the dent or bend. Step 2: Using a wooden block to soften the blow, take the hammer, and gently tap out the dent. The dolly should be positioned so that you don’t expand the metal too far.
Boiling water method Step 1: Pour boiling water carefully over the dent. The hot water will heat the chrome so that it’s more flexible. Step 2: If you can’t bend the chrome back in shape, try tapping it out with a hammer and dolly.
Be advised—it’s unlikely that either of these methods will result in a perfect repair. For that, you’ll need to go to a professional body shop and/or purchase a replacement bumper.
