How can I find out who someone’s car insurance company is?

I got into a car accident. I tried to get the at-fault driver’s car insurance information, but she refused to provide it. How can I find out if someone has car insurance?

There are a number of ways to check if the other driver has
car insurance
coverage after an accident:
  • Request help from the police: If you recorded the license plate number of the at-fault driver, provide this to the police so they can run a search.
  • Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV): You will need to provide your contact information and the reason for the request to the DMV. If approved, the DMV will give you the other person’s insurance company provider.
  • Check with your own car insurance company: If you can provide any information about the other driver or a copy of the police report, your insurance may be able to find the other driver’s information.
Keep in mind: Once you have identified the other party’s insurer and insurance information, your insurance company will contact the at-fault driver’s insurance provider for you.
