My insurance company is asking for proof of prior insurance. They said they can't find a record of my prior insurance company. I know I was insured. How can I find my old car insurance company?
First, you should check your email. Most companies are now paperless, so you likely received your policy documents by email. You can search through your email by using keywords, such as:
Car insurance
Policy number
Proof of insurance
Insurance policy
Renewal
Insurance payment
Make sure to search through all of your folders, including the trash folder.
If nothing comes up with those keywords, you can also search your phone. Most providers now offer mobile apps for customers to access their policies. You can search your phone for any insurance-related apps. Should that not work, look through old bank statements for insurance-related charges.
If all else fails, contact the DMV. Most states allow you to access insurance information through the DMV website. You may be able to find your prior insurance company that way.
