How can I file a car insurance claim if it was an accident only my car was involved in?

The other day, I was pulling out of my driveway and mistakenly ran directly into a temporary barrier set up towards the end of my driveway. The cement barrier is not damaged at all, but my car is a bit beat up. How can I file a car insurance claim for this type of accident?

Mistakes happen! Luckily, if you have
collision coverage
on your car insurance policy, you should be covered.
Without collision coverage, you will likely have to pay for all repairs. If you’re unsure about having collision coverage, check your policy’s
declaration page
.
If you have collision coverage and would like to
file a car insurance claim
, you need to provide the following:
  • Exact location of the accident
  • Time of the incident
  • How the damage occurred
  • Pictures of the damage
  • Any expenses paid out of pocket
  • Name and address of your preferred auto shop
After gathering the above information, you can file a claim by following these steps:
  • Call your insurance company or access your policy online or using the company’s app.
  • Tell them you need to file a claim or begin the claim process online.
  • Give a brief explanation of what happened.
  • Provide any additional information requested.
  • Follow all their instructions and be honest. You should never lie, guess, or exaggerate information when filing a claim.
Once you’ve filed a claim, the insurance company will inform you of the next steps and a timeline for when you should expect to hear back.
When the claim is settled, your policy will likely be rerated, and the cost of your car insurance may increase. Before accepting the price increase, you should compare quotes from other insurance companies. If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, use
