How can I clean vinyl leather car seats?

My new car has vinyl leather seats, and they’ve started to get a bit dirty. I want to wash them myself, but I’ve never had a vehicle with these types of seats. How can I clean my vinyl leather seats without causing any damage?

The last thing you want to do is damage the seats, so you’re doing the right thing by asking first!
The seats cannot be both vinyl and leather, so it sounds like you have leatherette seats, a faux-leather material commonly used in cars. Fortunately, leatherette seats are easy to clean in just a few minutes.
To clean the leatherette:
  • Vacuum the seats to remove any loose dirt and debris
  • Clean the seats using a microfiber cloth and a solution of dish or hand soap and warm water
  • Only dampen the cloth and avoid soaking it
  • Rinse the seats using a cloth and plain water to remove the remaining solution
  • Dry the seats using a clean, dry cloth to prevent bacteria or mold from growing
