How can I clean mud out of my car carpet?

A few days ago in Dallas, we got hit with some unexpected wet weather. My family and I got caught in it, and now my Honda’s interior is covered in mud. My wife and I managed to clean up all the mud on the surfaces and mats, but the carpet got the worst of it. What’s the best way to clean muddy car carpets?

Sorry to hear about the wet weather! Let’s get your car cleaned up.
To get mud out of your car’s carpet:
  1. Once it is fully dry, scrub the mud with a brush to loosen and break up the dirt.
  2. Follow up by vacuuming the car thoroughly. Go over it once with no attachment to suck up the surface dirt, then return with a brush attachment to get the deeper particles.
  3. Purchase car carpet cleaner or mix dishwashing liquid with cool water in a bucket. Using a clean brush, work the solution into the carpet until the suds come up white. Be careful not to soak the carpet though, as that could lead to mold or mildew growth.
  4. Dry the carpet with towels (or a wet vac, if available). Allow the carpet to dry fully for a day, keeping your windows and doors open for maximum air circulation.
