How can I check if a car is insured for free?

A few days ago, my car was parked in front of my house, and someone hit it and ran off. Thankfully, my neighbors were outside at the time and caught the guy’s license plates. Is there a free way I can check if the person who hit me is insured?

I’m sorry to hear that you were involved in a hit and run, but I’m so glad that you were able to get the license plates! To figure out if the car was insured for free, file a report with the police and contact your car insurance provider—they can properly inform you on what will happen next in this process.
When you report the
accident
, be sure to give your insurance and the police the driver’s license plates. It can take up to two weeks for the police to find out the driver’s information, and while your insurance company should be able to do this a bit faster, it can be a difficult process. It’s also possible that this might result in a dead end if they can’t find the driver, but having their license plates is already a big step in the right direction.
If you do hit a dead end, though, you can also try the DMV. You’ll need to provide your contact information, reasons for your request, and a copy of the incident report from the police. The DMV has the right to refuse your request, so it is really important to follow proper procedures here. But as long as you follow procedure, you should be able to get the driver’s insurance information.
Unfortunately, hit and runs are a very common occurrence that can put drivers in really stressful situations, and can sometimes cause car insurance premiums to increase. If you feel that you are paying too much, or if you’re unsatisfied with your current provider, give the
