How can I check if a car has insurance?

How can I find out if someone has auto insurance? Someone hit my car, and a witness got their license plate. I want to find out if they have car insurance to cover the damages to my Toyota Prius.

“I am so sorry to hear that—I hope you are alright!
There are two options to find out if someone has car insurance to cover the damages to your car:
  • Contact the police: To request information about the other driver from the police, you’ll need to provide the license plate number and how the collision occurred.
  • Contact your local motor vehicle department: You could also ask the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). To request information, you will need to give your contact information and reasons for the request.
To best prepare for unforeseen circumstances such as this, it would be a valuable investment to have
collision coverage
included on your car insurance policy. However, collision insurance may not be necessary for you if you are already covered under a different policy or if your car is older (because the cost of insurance will be more than the cost to repair the damages of your vehicle).
If you’re seeking better car insurance but would rather leave the hard work of finding a new policy to someone else, use
