How can I change the battery in my Honda key?

I just got bought my brother’s old car, and he told me the key fob stopped working three years ago. I asked him what was wrong with it, and he told me he hadn’t changed the battery in over 10 years. What steps should I take to change the battery in my Honda key?

On average, key fob batteries last between 3-4 years—so it’s way past time you change the battery. To change the battery in your
Honda
key, follow these steps to open your key fob:
  • Press the button above the Honda logo and slide it to release the metal key.
  • Pull out the metal key from the fob.
  • Insert the key back into the slot and twist it sideways to pry open the fob.
  • Carefully pull the two halves apart.
Once the key fob is open, you’ll likely find corrosion around the battery. To remove it, scrub any corrosion with a toothbrush dipped in a mixture of white vinegar, water, and baking soda.
After the area is clean and dry, you can follow these steps to replace the battery:
  • Start by prying up the old battery with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Put your new battery in place using the + and - symbols to guide you.
  • Gently snap both halves of the fob back together.
  • Put the key back where you pulled it from.
  • Test the fob!
