How can I become a driving instructor in Washington state?
I love teaching people how to drive safely and I’ve been contemplating the idea of becoming a driving instructor. I live in Washington state but am not sure what I need to apply. How can I become a driving instructor?

Helping young people learn to practice safety on the road is admirable! Becoming a driving instructor in
Washington
state requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid state driver’s license and instructor’s license, and—usually—2-5 years of driving experience. Here’s what you need to do:
- **Complete your instructor training with a certified driving instructor school
- Review documents to prepare for your skills and knowledge tests—Washington Driver Guide, Washington state laws on driver training schools and the rules of the road, Drive Right (10th edition)
- Book your test appointment with a licensing service office and complete our exams—there is a $25 testing fee**
- Schedule and submit your fingerprint background check
Before you apply online, you’ll need:
- A SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account
- Driver’s abstract from any states outside of Washington where you’ve held a driver’s license
- Proof that you’ve completed instructor training
- Application fee
