How bad is the traffic in New York City?

City is ranked third among cities in the U.S. with the worst congestion
and falls into fifth place globally. On average, drivers lose 117 hours to traffic yearly. On top of that, New York’s Brooklyn Queens Expressway, also known as the BQE, claimed second place as the worst corridor in the United States.
If you’re not keen on wasting your vacation sitting in New York traffic, here are some tips for a smooth drive:
- Avoid NYC rush hour (7 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 7 pm)
- Stay off the roads on Gridlock Days
- Check your traffic app before you hit the road
- Use your GPS
- Find alternate routes to your destination
