Does your home insurance cover termites?

My contractor was replacing some flooring and found evidence of termites in the floor joists. Will homeowners insurance cover damage from termites?

It’s unlikely that your insurance will cover damage done by termites. This is because termite damage occurs over time. Watching for signs of termites—and addressing the issue—is considered standard home maintenance. In other words, termite damage is avoidable.
In the future, keep a lookout for these signs of termite damage:
  • Small insect tunnels near your foundation
  • Tiny holes in wood
  • Irregular floor boards
If severe enough, termite damage can compromise the structure of your house. Make sure to have an exterminator perform a thorough inspection and take care of the infestation as soon as possible.
