Does your driving record follow you from state to state?

Will my driving record follow me if I move to a new state? I know driving laws are state-regulated, so I was wondering if points on my record from one state will count in another state.

In most cases, your driving record will follow you from state to state. However, you may be able to escape a bad driving record if you move to one of the following states:
  • Georgia
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Tennessee
  • Wisconsin
Most states are part of an agreement to honor traffic violations and losses of driving privileges called the Driver’s License Compact (DLC). The five states above are not members of the DLC—so you’ll have a better chance of getting a fresh start with a
clean driving record
.
Keep in mind: Clearing your state driving record by moving to one of these states will not necessarily clear violations from your
car insurance
records. You can still expect to pay higher rates if you’ve had a violation in the past three to five years—no matter what your state record reflects.
