Does the Ford Fusion Energi charge while you're driving?

I read some hybrid vehicles charge their batteries while driving, allowing you to take long road trips. The Fusion Energi seems perfect for me, but I don’t know if it can go the distance. Does the Ford Fusion Energi charge itself while driving?

Technically, yes, but it’s not by design. There is a way to force the Fusion Energi to charge its electric battery by burning gasoline. However, the improvements to your overall mileage will be negligible, if any.
I’ll do my best to summarize the science. The Fusion Energi, like all plug-in hybrid vehicles, combines two powertrains: a gasoline-powered engine and a battery-powered generator. When the electric battery pack runs out, the vehicle switches to the gas engine and vice versa.
You could force the gas powertrain to recharge the battery and turn the generator. Still, the power lost by converting gas to electricity makes this method less efficient than using the gasoline engine as intended.
If you need to take the Fusion Energi long distances, it’s best to plan by identifying Level 2 charging stations in urban centers along your route. You can keep going in between charges by refueling at regular gas stations.
