When you’re behind the wheel of a BMW 330e
, the plug-in hybrid has several charging options, including charging while driving using regenerative braking. Regenerative braking is a technique that captures and stores energy whenever you use the brakes; it captures kinetic energy that otherwise would have been wasted when the vehicle decelerates or stops when braking. But while regenerative braking will increase your battery to some degree, it doesn’t offer enough battery power to keep your car running long-term.
Luckily, there are other charging options:
Level 1 (110V) charger: Can be plugged into a home electrical wall socket; it takes 10.9 hours for a full charge at 110V.
Level 2 (220V) charger: Fast-charging wall box unit taking 2.9 hours for a full charge at 220V.
Unlike some plug-in hybrids that can use a rapid charger, the BMW 33e can’t have DC charging.
Using level 1 or 2 chargers, you can plug your 330e in at home. You can also utilize your BMW 330e’s self-charging feature by activating Battery Control Mode. When the car is in Battery Control Mode, its electric motor acts like a generator to extend the duration of the high-voltage battery when you can’t charge it for a while. This mode shouldn’t always be used, but it‘s a nice feature when you want to reduce your emissions.
