Does renters insurance pay for carpet replacement?
I’m moving out of my apartment next week to another state. After ten years of living here, the carpet has sustained some damages from me, my guests, and my cat. Does my renters insurance cover the cost of carpet replacement?

Moving out of state
is hard enough as it is. Unfortunately, your renters insurance likely won’t pay to replace your carpet if the damage was caused by you, your guests, or regular wear and tear. To reduce replacement costs of your carpet, try the following:
- Clean old stains. Mix dish soap, laundry detergent, and a cleaning agent into hot water and dab the stained area with a paper towel. You can also use store-bought cleaner or other DIY recipes to remove old stains.
- Patch up damaged areas. If you have a patch of carpet that’s worn down or destroyed, head to the carpet store and find a carpet square that is the closest match to yours. Cut a portion out with a utility knife and use carpet tape to stick it down.
- Deodorize. If you have a pet, your carpet will likely smell like it. Try sprinkling baking soda or vinegar to deodorize your carpet.
If the damage to your carpet is irreparable, your landlord will likely keep your security deposit and charge you an additional replacement fee.
