Does renters insurance cover smoke damage?

There was a small fire in my apartment building last week. Thankfully, the flames did not reach my apartment, but the smoke certainly did! Some of my furniture is ruined by the smoke damage and I’ll need to get it replaced. Will my renters insurance cover smoke damage?

I’m sorry to hear about the fire in your building—I hope everyone is alright! The good news is smoke damage is usually a covered peril in renters insurance.
Renters insurance
will cover smoke damage caused by a fire or its aftermath. The fire also doesn’t need to be from your apartment—smoke from another building or the street is still covered.
Smoke damage that is not covered would be from cigarette smoke, as that is not a named peril and preventable.
Hold on to the damaged items and take pictures of your apartment and building. They can serve as proof of loss in your insurance claim, simplifying the claims process.
If you’re hoping to save on your renters insurance in the future, you should consider bundling it with an automotive policy! To find the best deals on bundling, use the
