Does renters insurance cover jewelry?

Last week a burglar broke into my apartment and stole a bunch of small items. I have a plan to recover most of my lost belongings, but I don’t know if my insurance will cover some jewelry that was taken. Does renters insurance cover jewelry?

So sorry to hear about the break-in and your stolen items! The good news is that renters insurance covers jewelry in the instance of theft.
However, you’ll need to factor in your deductible (how much you have to pay before insurance kicks in) and your coverage limits to calculate how much money you can receive. Reimbursements for jewelry after loss or theft are often lower than for other items.
In general, renters insurance covers property damage that results from a
named peril
on the policy. Examples include fire, vandalism, theft, tornado, and explosion.
However, some basic renters insurance policies will only reimburse jewelry if it was stolen—meaning that jewelry losses due to a fire or tornado may not be covered.
You can add a rider to your policy that extends the list of covered risks for jewelry to any covered peril, but this will also raise your rates.
