Does renters insurance cover hurricane damage?

My family and I are moving to a different state next month, and our new city has a high risk of hurricanes. We’re just renting a place, so we’ll only be able to buy renters insurance. Does renters insurance cover hurricane damage?

Congratulations on the move—and it’s great that you’re thinking ahead! Unfortunately,
renters insurance
won’t cover hurricane damage.
Hurricanes can cause damage to your home due to wind and flooding. While wind damage is usually considered a
named peril
under renters insurance (meaning it’ll be covered), flooding from external sources and weather events generally won’t be covered.
To protect yourself fully against hurricane damage, you’ll have to purchase an additional flood insurance policy. Since you live in a hurricane-prone area, you might face relatively high rates—but it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry when it comes to protecting your belongings!
While renters insurance will not protect you in this situation, this is a good time to double-check that your insurance covers you elsewhere. To find the best coverage at the best rate, download the
