We had some flooding in my city and it reached my apartment building. A bunch of my books and electronics got damaged. Does renters insurance cover flood damage to personal property?

Sorry to hear about the damage! Renters insurance does not cover damage due to flooding, or hurricanes unfortunately. Your landlord isn’t liable either.
In most areas, you need a separate flood insurance policy or a flood endorsement to have protection from flood-related losses.
You do have some protection from rain and storm damage under certain conditions. For instance, if a falling tree branch broke your window and let in the water, your policy may cover the damage. If you leave the window open yourself, however, the policy won’t cover the costs.
