I’m moving out of my apartment and into my first house next month. I have some delicate items I’m a little worried might get damaged by movers. Does renters insurance cover damages when moving out?

—and damage by movers likely isn’t one of them.However, your moving company may offer moving insurance that makes them liable for your possessions from the moment they handle your belongings until they drop things off at your new place. There are two types of moving insurance policies:
- Full value protection: This costs extra, but the company will replace any damaged, lost, or stolen items. There are some limits and exclusions, so be sure to verify what’s covered.
- Released value protection: This is usually offered free of charge and covers up to 60 cents per pound, per item. If your new 85-pound, $500 bed frame was broken, for example, they would only give you $141.
Depending on the number of items you have and their value, investing in full value protection might be worth it! The cost of moving insurance can range between $200 and $1,000.
It also may be better to transport small, high-value items (like jewelry, fine plate ware, or antiques) yourself to save yourself money and stress.
