Does renters insurance cover appliance repairs?

My fridge stopped working overnight for some reason. I live in an apartment, and I bought this fridge myself. I’ve had the same renters insurance the last few years, around the same time I moved into the apartment, but I don’t remember what was included in my policy when I signed up. Sorry to hear about your fridge! Long story short: your insurance probably won’t cover your fridge.
A standard renters insurance policy typically covers the loss or damage of your personal belongings due to events like fires, theft, or severe weather. The catch is that usually the cause of the damage has to be from a
named peril
in your policy for you to receive coverage.
If your fridge was damaged in a fire or by a short circuit and these are named perils in your policy, repairs or replacement should be covered. If the food you had inside your fridge went bad, that might also be covered if the cause was under a named peril in your policy.
If the culprit is a cause other than something named in your policy, however, or if it’s listed as an exclusion, you may, unfortunately, be out of luck. Standard wear and tear, for example, usually isn’t covered.
Since you don’t know for sure yet why your fridge has stopped working, it’s hard to say whether your insurance will pay for the repair. You’ll want to check with your insurance company directly to find out whether they’d help you cover your repair.
Keep in mind your coverage may only be up to a certain amount, depending on your policy.
Hopefully, your fridge is back in working order soon, and you hear some good news from your insurance company.
Depending on what you find out about your fridge, you may decide you want to find renters insurance elsewhere. If that’s the case,
