Does rental car insurance cover flooding damage?
I’m on vacation in Florida and major storms are in the forecast. Does rental car insurance include flooding coverage? I want to make sure we’re not held responsible if something happens to the rental car.

“Whether or not your rental car will be covered if it incurs flood damage depends on if you have personal car insurance or purchased rental car insurance through the rental company—and which coverages you’ve opted for.
If you have personal car insurance and your plan includes
comprehensive coverage
, this may extend to your rental car and will cover damages in the event of a natural disaster like a flood. But keep in mind that you will be on the hook for your comprehensive deductible
.If you do not have personal car insurance or you have not added comprehensive coverage to your own car insurance policy, your best bet is to purchase the loss damage waiver (LDW) directly from the rental car company (in addition to liability coverage, which is required by law in most states). LDW can be pricey—but nowhere near as expensive as what you’ll pay if you aren’t properly covered and your rental is damaged by flooding.
Check with your personal car insurance provider and read the rental car insurance policy carefully for specifics. And don’t hesitate to reach out to an agent if you have further questions.
