This weekend, the stream running next to the house we rent rose above its banks and wound up flooding our first floor. Does Progressive renters insurance cover flood damage to our personal possessions?

How terrible! As lovely as it is to live near a stream or river, flooding is always a possibility. Unfortunately, a standard renters insurance policy—from
or any other insurer—will not cover water damage caused by naturally occurring floods. If the flooding had been due to a pipe that burst unexpectedly inside your home, your property would have been protected.
Here’s a brief overview of what type of water damage a standard
Damages caused by flooding and storm surges are not covered. If you live in an area that’s prone to flooding, consider taking out extra flood insurance. You can often purchase a policy through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurer.
Damages caused by a burst pipe or hot water tank inside your house are covered. As long as the water pipe burst suddenly and unexpectedly, a standard renters policy will help you replace personal property destroyed by water damage. However, if you knew a pipe or water tank was leaking—and ignored the problem—you wouldn’t be covered.
Once you get your life back together, do look into flood insurance so that if the stream does rise again, you’ll be protected.
