Does my spouse need to be on our home insurance policy?

My wife and I just bought our first house. We’re so excited. However, we’re a little confused about the process of purchasing home insurance. Will my spouse need to be on the home insurance policy? We co-own the house.

Congratulations on buying your first home. What an accomplishment! For a jointly owned property, both you and your spouse should be named on the
homeowners insurance policy
.
With both names on the insurance policy, you and your spouse will be the named insured, meaning you both can file claims and make changes. Additionally, since you are married, most insurance companies require both of your names on the policy.
If you haven’t decided on an insurance company yet, be sure to request quotes using both of your names and information. You’ll need to provide you and your spouse’s full legal name, social security number, and other personal information.
Should you need help finding a home insurance policy, consider using
