Does my renters insurance cover roof damage?

We got hit by a pretty bad hail storm last night and there are a couple of decent dents in our roof. We’re just renting the place, so will our renters insurance cover the roof damage?

I’m sorry to hear about your roof—hail can do so much damage in so little time!
Your renters won’t cover roof damage since it’s a part of the dwelling, which your landlord’s home insurance policy covers.
Renters insurance
protects your personal property, provides liability coverage, and covers additional living expenses if your apartment was damaged and deemed uninhabitable.
Your landlord will have to file a claim with their insurance company to repair the roof. That said, since hail is one of the covered
named perils
in most home and renters insurance policies, if the hail damaged any of your property, you could submit a claim.
Even if you don’t have to submit a claim, now is still a good time to look over your existing policy for any holes—you might be missing out on some essential coverage or great savings!
