Does my renters insurance cover flooding?

I’m moving states next year and the area I’ll be living in has a pretty bad flood season. The place I’m looking at is a ground-floor apartment, so I’m kinda worried about any flooding—will my renters insurance cover flood damage?

Congrats on the move, that’s so exciting!
Unfortunately, external flooding is not covered by a regular renters insurance policy.
Water damage is only covered under renters insurance if it’s caused by
named perils
in your policy—this can be burst pipes, accidental overflows, etc.
Since you’ll be living in a high-risk area, it’s recommended that you purchase additional flood insurance. You can do this through the FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (FLIP) or through a private provider.
While renters insurance won’t have you covered in this case, now is a good time to double-check if your current policy is best for you. Doing this is easier than ever thanks to the
Jerry
app.
A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and helps to cancel your old policy. Even better—Jerry will help you
bundle your home and auto policies
for maximum savings.
