Does my renters insurance cover car break-ins?

There’s been a rise in car break-ins in our neighborhood recently, and I’m worried it might happen to us soon. Our rental only has street parking, so we don’t really have a safe place to park. Will my renters insurance cover damage from car break-ins?

Having renters insurance is a great way to keep you and your things protected—and it will apply to your property if your car is broken into!
Renters insurance will cover any personal property inside your car at the time of the break-in. So your renters insurance will cover a stolen laptop from your back seat, but it won’t cover the cost of replacing a broken window or if your car is stolen entirely.
While you may consider your car personal property, it does not fall under the boundaries of your
renters insurance
coverage, in part because cars have their own insurance policies.
If you’re concerned about car theft,
comprehensive coverage
is the best coverage to carry as it covers non-collision-related damage, like theft or vandalism.
