Does my car insurance cover hit-and-run accidents?

I haven't been involved in a hit-and-run accident, but it's happened to several people I know. Now I'm a bit paranoid. Will my car insurance cover hit-and-run accidents?

“If you have bare-bones liability insurance, you probably aren’t covered in the event of a hit-and-run. However, you can add some coverages to your policy to make certain you’re covered if this scenario should occur.
In general, look for policies that include collision coverage, uninsured motorist coverage, and medical payments coverage. These can usually cover you in a hit-and-run, saving you thousands of dollars, even if the fleeing driver is never found.”
