Does my AAA car insurance cover me in Mexico?

I’m getting ready to take a road trip across the border. Will my AAA insurance cover me while I’m driving in Mexico?

No. Standard
AAA car insurance
will not cover you in Mexico. Instead, you’ll need to temporarily add specialized car insurance to your AAA policy.
You can purchase
Mexico car insurance
through AAA by contacting your insurance agent:
  • AAA partners with a Mexican provider to make sure their customers can get the right type of coverage while traveling through Mexico as a tourist.
  • Policies from AAA range from one day to a year and offer anything from
    basic liability coverage
to extended coverage for cars, RVs, and trailers.
  • AAA only offers Mexican car insurance policies to clients in California, New Mexico, and Texas.
Keep in mind: You may want to shop for quotes from other car insurance providers that offer more comprehensive Mexican coverage options if you drive to Mexico frequently.
Make sure you’ve got your
insurance declaration page
and ID cards in your vehicle at all times once you’re driving in Mexico. You’ll need to provide these to authorities if you’re in an accident or pulled over by law enforcement.
