Does life insurance cover death caused by drinking and driving?

We recently lost my uncle to drinking and driving, and my aunt is having a lot of trouble getting anything from his life insurance. I just want to help my family. Does life insurance cover death caused by drunk driving?

I cannot imagine how hard this must be on you and your family. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, life insurance policies are likely to deny claims when the cause of death is related to drinking and driving.
Life insurance policies will deny claims for drunk-driving-related deaths based on two grounds:
  • The death was due to illegal activity
  • The death can be argued to be self-inflicted since driving while intoxicated is known to be a dangerous act
Your next step could be to see if your uncle’s car insurance coverage included
personal injury protection (PIP)
, which could at least help cover funeral expenses. Certain states require PIP under
no-fault insurance laws
, so you may have a better chance with any claims.
