Does it matter how many times you failed a driving test?

I’m in the process of trying to get my license, and I just failed my first driving test. What happens if you fail the driving test multiple times?

Sorry to hear about your test results—but know that it’s totally normal!
It does matter how many times you have failed a driving test. Generally, you can take your driving test three times total to get your license. However, the limits vary from state to state.
If your state allows three attempts, this means you can fail your driving test twice before needing to restart the licensing process, which will entail driving with a permit and waiting six months to take the driver’s license test again.
Some states have higher limits. For instance, New York has no limit and Florida allows five tries total. Other states require a shorter waiting period between attempts—usually around two weeks.
Good luck on your next try! Make sure to get lots of behind-the-wheel practice right before your test so that you’re best prepared.
