Does home insurance cover storm damage?

We live in an area that gets some extreme weather. Several trees recently fell on houses in my neighborhood. Will my home insurance cover storm damage?

Yikes! A tree falling on your house is definitely not good, and thankfully, home insurance will typically cover storm damage as long as it results from a
covered peril
.
Covered perils that may cause storm damage are:
  • Snow and ice
  • Wind
  • Hail
  • Lightning
  • Falling objects
That said, storm damage from flooding isn’t covered. If your area is prone to extreme weather that involves flooding, you’ll want to purchase a separate flood policy to ensure your property and home are covered. You can contact your insurance company directly or the National Flood Insurance Program for more information about flood policies.
