Does home insurance cover rotten wood?

My husband and I have been planning to remodel our kitchen, but when a contractor came over to give a quote, he said there was a good amount of rotten wood under our tiles. We will have to replace the wood, but will my home insurance cover rotten wood?

I’m sorry to hear about the rotten wood, but you must be excited about the remodel! Your home insurance will cover rotten wood if one of
the 16 perils
named in your policy caused the damage.
That said, more often than not, rotten wood isn’t covered as it’s usually caused by:
  • Age
  • Poor maintenance
  • General wear and tear
  • Pests
  • Flooding
The best thing you and your husband can do is locate the source of the problem and contact your insurance company to explain the situation. An agent can explain your policy coverage and determine whether you can submit a claim.
If you don’t have coverage, you can make the cost of repairs a bit more manageable by using
Jerry
to save on both your home and car insurance.
After providing you with a comprehensive cross-analysis of the best policies across providers, Jerry will handle the phone calls, paperwork, and renewals for your top pick so that you don’t have to. They even help cancel your old policy. So why do all that extra work when Jerry can do it better?
