Does home insurance cover rodents?

When my wife and I got back from vacation, we quickly realized we have some new roommates. Will my home insurance cover a rodent infestation?

No one likes unannounced company, so that sounds like a less than ideal situation to come home to!
The bad news is that
home insurance
will rarely cover rodents taking over your house.
Besides not being one of the
covered perils
listed in your policy’s details, home insurance won’t offer coverage because rodent damage is considered preventable with proper maintenance. Damage resulting from lack of care isn’t covered, including things like:
  • Neglect
  • General wear and tear
  • Age
You should contact your insurance company if you think you may be covered or have additional questions about coverage or the claims process. Policies differ by provider, so the best way to learn more is to speak with your insurer directly.
Finally, unless your new rodent roommates pay rent, you’ll likely want to hire an exterminator, which isn’t cheap. Fortunately, you can use the
Jerry
app to help cover the cost by saving on both your home and
car insurance
policies.
