Does home insurance cover gas leaks?

My grandfather wound up in the hospital because he became ill from a gas leak in his house. He’s recovering, thankfully—but will his home insurance cover the cost of reinstalling his gas stove, where the problem was found?

How terrible! Thankfully he’s okay. The situation could have been worse, as gas leaks can lead to explosions in the home. In terms of his homeowners coverage, the answer depends on a few things:
  • If the stove was old and he failed to keep up its maintenance, it’s unlikely that his policy will cover the cost of fixing the leak.
  • If the stove was installed improperly to begin with, again, this probably won’t be covered by his policy. You may be able to file a claim against the person who installed it.
  • If the problem was caused by a peril explicitly named in his policy—such as a fire or vandalism—the cost of repairing the stove will likely be covered.
Before he comes home from the hospital, be sure to have a professional investigate the matter and make sure there is nothing else dangerous going on.
