Does home insurance cover French drains?

"My new house comes with a French drain installed. If it becomes damaged or defective, will my home insurance cover it?

“Great question! If you have water/sewer backup coverage on your policy and the French drain fails to operate properly, the damage would be covered. The insurance doesn’t cover the actual French drain itself, but you could add a rider for it or get a separate policy that specifically covers the actual drain.
Keep in mind that if the water damage is due to a flood, you need a separate flood policy to cover that.
