Does home insurance cover decks?

We just purchased a home with an attached deck. We’re really excited about it, but we live in an area prone to bad storms and weather. We have a home insurance policy. Would home insurance cover decks?

Congrats on the new home! A deck sounds wonderful for relaxing. Luckily, you won’t have to worry about coverage either, since home insurance covers decks.
Since your deck is attached to your home, it’s considered a part of your home or dwelling. Any damage that occurs to your deck would have coverage under your Coverage A or dwelling coverage. That said, the damage would still need to be from a
covered peril
.
Even if your deck wasn’t attached to your home, you’d still have coverage under the other structures part of your policy.
Bad weather and storms are covered perils in a home insurance policy, but be sure to double-check your policy’s exclusions. If flooding, earthquakes, or landslides are common where you live, you would need a separate policy to cover any damage that may occur to your home or your deck.
