Does home insurance cover burst frozen pipes?

We had a crazy winter storm that was a lot worse than expected. We did everything we could to protect our home, but we still ended up with burst frozen pipes. Since we have home insurance, we’re considering submitting a claim. Will home insurance cover burst frozen pipes?

Unexpected weather and damage are a terrible combination. Thankfully, your home insurance should cover burst frozen pipes.
Home insurance
covers several types of accidental or sudden damage, including:
  • Accidental discharge of water or steam
  • Freezing
  • Weight of ice or snow
Since the storm was unexpected and you took all the precautions necessary, you shouldn’t have an issue submitting a claim to your insurance.
The only time an insurance company could potentially deny a claim in this situation is if you acted carelessly. For example, if you went away on vacation and turned off the heat in your home. As you likely used reasonable care during this period, there shouldn’t be any issues with your claim.
That said, the repairs for the pipes will need to cost more than your deductible before your insurance provides coverage.
If you submit a claim and find your home insurance premium increases, consider shopping around with the
