Does home insurance cover boats?
Last weekend a tree fell on my husband’s bass boat and did a lot of damage (it was parked in our driveway). Will our homeowners policy cover the cost of repairs?

Sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, homeowners insurance usually doesn’t cover fallen tree damage done to cars or boats in a driveway—assuming, of course, that it was your tree that fell on the boat.
If it was your neighbor’s tree—and the tree fell because of his negligence (e.g., the tree was rotten and he didn’t cut it down)—you may be able to get relief from your neighbor’s personal liability coverage.
When will homeowners insurance cover damage to your boat?
- Theft: If your boat were stolen, your homeowners insurance would likely cover some of the loss (typically only up to $1,000 or $1,500).
- Fire: If your boat caught on fire, this would likely be covered, but again, only up to a certain (small) amount.
- Other perils: There are other types of damage that may be covered by your policy, but the payout will be very small.
Home insurance only covers damages to property that are caused by named perils. Any hazard not explicitly listed on your policy will not be covered.
Once your husband has the boat fixed, he should seriously consider taking out a separate boaters insurance policy. This would provide protection for the boat similar to car insurance coverages.
