Does home insurance cover black mold damage?
I noticed some mold on my basement ceiling above my washing machine and I’m afraid it could be black mold. Does home insurance cover black mold damage?

You’re right to be concerned—black mold is extremely toxic! In most cases, home insurance does not cover black mold damage.
Home insurance policies may cover black
mold damage
if you can prove that it was caused by one of the perils listed on your policy, such as water damage or putting out a fire. If a house fire is extinguished with water, for instance, the excess moisture could cause black mold. In this case, you would be entitled to make a claim.
To improve your chances of making a successful claim, you need to prove that you are doing everything you can to mitigate the damage. Here are some steps you can take before making a claim:
- Without disturbing the mold, get rid of excess moisture in the area. Dry any damp surfaces and turn on a fan.
- Remove any wet items, such as carpeting or furniture.
- Open windows and doors to improve circulation in the area.
- Take photos of all black mold damage as well as any evidence of water leaks.
Keep in mind that standard home insurance policies don’t include flooding, sewer backups, or negligence. If you purchased flood insurance or other optional endorsements, contact your home insurance company to discuss your options.
