Does health insurance cover drunk driving accidents?

I just got my first job that offers health insurance. About three months ago, my friend was injured in a drunk driving accident where the other driver was cited with a DUI. Now that I have insurance, I wasn’t sure if it applied to this situation. If I got into a drunk driving accident, would my health insurance cover it?

Congrats on your first job with health insurance! It’s always a relieving feeling to know you’re covered. That said, health insurance should cover drunk driving accidents, provided that you were not drunk when the incident occurred. You may also be reimbursed through your coverage or the other driver’s
car insurance
, so you might not have to use your own health insurance.
If you were the intoxicated driver in the accident and you were injured, your health insurance company may deny payment of your medical treatment. However, you would need to check the fine print in your health insurance policy to know for sure.
Even if you’re covered by your health insurance, you may still need to pay a deductible. So to save up some money in case of an emergency like an accident, shop around for affordable car insurance today by using the
