Does flood insurance cover damage caused by hurricanes?

If a hurricane causes damage to my home in Louisiana, will I be covered by my flood insurance? I moved here recently, so I haven't had to deal with this type of event yet.

“A standard
flood insurance
policy will cover hurricane-related flooding, though you may have a separate deductible for hurricane damage claims.
Hurricane-related wind damage is typically covered under your homeowners insurance. Again, wind and hurricane deductibles may be higher than regular home insurance deductibles.
Remember that a standard Louisiana home insurance policy does not cover flood damage. You must purchase flood insurance separately. If your home insurance provider offers flood insurance, you may add it on through them. If they don’t, you can either buy private flood insurance through another private insurer or you can get a federally backed flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Note that flood insurance doesn’t kick in right away; there is typically a 30-day waiting period. So don’t hold off until a storm is predicted to hit your area to purchase a policy—it will likely be too late.
