Does filing a home insurance claim raise your rates?

I’ve had the same homeowners policy for the last five years. I haven’t filed a claim before, but I’m going to have to for some recent storm damage. Based on the repair estimate, I don’t think I can afford to pay for it out of pocket. Will filing a home insurance claim raise my rates?

I’m sorry to hear about the damage to your home! Filing a home insurance claim
raise your rates. The amount that your rate will increase depends on several factors, including:
  • The amount of damage
  • Your prior claim history
  • Your insurance company’s policies
  • The coverage you have
Since you haven’t filed a
home insurance
claim before, you’re more likely to see a smaller increase. That said, every insurance company is different. Some companies increase policies by 10% after any claim submission, whereas others won’t.
Additionally, where you live has an impact on your increase. Some states have specific laws that prevent insurance companies from raising rates if you’ve only filed one claim.
To determine how much your insurance may increase, speak to an agent with your insurance company. They typically can give you a better idea of how filing a claim may impact your rate.
Even if your rate increases after filing a claim, you still have options. Insurance companies are all different and have unique ways to rate policies. If your current insurance company raises your rate, it doesn’t mean you’ll pay more with every company, so it’s important to shop around.
