Does Driving for Uber Void My Vehicle’s Warranty?

I’m debating signing up to drive for Uber or another rideshare service for some extra money. But I’ve heard that using your car for rideshare work is commercial work, and that voids your warranty. Is it true that driving for Uber can void your vehicle’s warranty?

We totally understand the need for extra money, and rideshare services are a convenient way to earn additional income. But unfortunately, in most cases, yes, driving for Uber can void your vehicle warranty.
But don’t give up just yet! Even without warranties, most Uber and Lyft drivers know they need to be prepared for car trouble while they’re on the clock. They have options, including
vehicle service contracts
and extended warranties, and so do you.
Before you dive into either of these, however, there are a few points you should consider:
  • Do you need the extended warranty or contract? Read the terms of your own warranty first before deciding. While uncommon, your warranty may not specifically prohibit commercial vehicle use (look for the word taxi in your warranty).
  • Are you planning to use your personal vehicle for rideshare? If you’re using your personal vehicle for rideshare work, then you likely will need a tailored warranty or service contract. But if you have a car specifically for rideshare use, it may not be worth the extra money.
Don’t forget that your warranty isn’t the only thing that may change if you use your vehicle for rideshare gigs. You’ll also need car insurance that specifically covers rideshare use. Your insurance carrier may already offer
rideshare insurance
, so be sure to do your research.
But if your carrier doesn’t offer rideshare insurance, or if you want to find a more affordable policy, just fire up
