Does California require renters insurance?

My sister and I are planning to rent an apartment together in California. We don’t have much and don’t really feel that renters insurance is necessary for us, so if we can avoid getting it, we will. Does California require renters insurance?

Renters insurance is a great way to protect your personal property, but not everyone feels that it is necessary, and that’s just fine.
California does not require renters insurance by law. However, any landlord can require it as part of their lease terms. So, while you look for apartments, be sure to ask about the building’s renters insurance policy.
If you feel that renters insurance is an unnecessary expense, be sure that you do your research before you rule it out completely. If you move to an area where theft or fires are common, renters insurance is the only way to avoid having to pay out-of-pocket for replacement items.
