Do you use your own car for the driving test?

I just scheduled an appointment to take my driving test, but I’m a bit worried about it. I’m used to driving my parents’ car, so driving the DMV’s car might create some issues. Can I use my own car for the driving test instead?

You always use your own car for the driving test, as the DMV doesn’t furnish cars for the test.
If the DMV had their own cars and everyone drove them, they would have excessive insurance bills and would have to pay for gas. It’s much simpler for them to just require everyone to use their own vehicles.
As long as your parents’ car has up-to-date
registration
and current insurance, you can use it for the
driving test
. Before the test, the examiners will make sure the car also has:
  • Valid inspection stickers
  • Current license plates, although your registration will affirm this
  • Horn in working order
  • Two brakes (foot brake and parking/emergency brake)
  • Working seat belts
  • Doors in proper working order
  • All headlights, taillights, and turn signals in proper working order
If you don’t have everything on this list above, rectify the situation before you arrive at the DMV. Otherwise, the examiner will not let you take the test and you’ll have to reschedule.
Remember to practice operating the lights, seat belts, pedals, doors, and buttons to prove to the examiner that you know how to safely drive the car. Good luck!
